Kirtan is the name for Hindu devotional call-and-response chanting which means remembering the name of God. By chanting the name of God with true devotion we are able to access the Divine within, thus attaining a state of bliss. Devotional chanting is found in all traditions. Though the forms vary, the goal is the same: Union with the Divine. Sacred songs with call-and-response sections from the Sufi, Hindu and Buddhist traditions bring mind, body, and voice together in a way that is spiritually liberating, and physically, mentally and emotionally restorative.  There are often short meditations between the chants that function as sound healings. These allow deep nervous system alignment as the mind bathes in the bliss of the quiet spaces. There is a performance element to this event, but the real purpose is to experience the depth of silence and inner space, and the power of sound, mantras, and Living Word/Living Light as it flows through you. Shanti Shivani & Friends will offer an Indian Classical Raga that they will improvise on as a form of sound meditation as well as Hindu and Sufi call-and-response chants. – Shanti Shivani – vocals, tambura She will be joined by master musicians – Jesse Whitworth on mandolin, guitar and flute, – Nisha Calkins on cello – Ken Sokolov on percussion, i.e. tabla, frame drum and doumbek
